Finally found a good staking set!!  I've been looking for one since I started watch repairing a few months back.  But most I saw had either just been sold, missing parts, or in bad condition.

 

But eureka!  I got one that fits the bill (including cannon pinion resizers, and a micrometer for jewel replacement), and wasn't going to let it pass up, or let one of you buggers snag it before me this time.   ;)

 

I highly recommend to be patience when looking for a staking set, as good ones do come up from time to time.

Hi. An alternative to 2000 grit paper is wire wool and oil cleans and polishes.

An absolute beauty Lawson, congratulations! I got one just like yours ( K&D 18 R) finally. I followed Geo's suggestions about reverse stakes and all. Just waiting for it to arrive. I'll post pictures too!

Well, I just received my 18R. I haven't really sorted out what goes where and probably be finishing the case but everything looks in good order and as a bonus I got the book Geo recommended and a jewel gauge I think! It was a little bit pricey but I figure it has most what I will need in quite a while. So, at Lawson's request, here it is:

Awesome set there Bob!

I thought you said there was items missing?  It looks complete to me mate.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I researched they are a 100 piece kit, with slots for 114 items: so 14 extra slots.

 

Oh ....and as Marjorie says ....

I have had a K&D staking set for a few years now.

The only issue I have is some of the really small holes are blocked and no mattter what I have tried they will not unblock. I now have to use a stump when I need a small hole. Also I had a few of the punches missing but I found the Bergeon punches fit Ok and purchased from Cousins.

That looks like a good set bob .looks like all of it is there .all the ones I have looked at have at less 1or2 missing lol

Thank you Lawson, I was also pleasantly surprised when I got it last night! It seems all the slots are filled so I'd say 100 plus stakes, stumps et al. The vendor even sent the original manual -- it is not in the picture but inside the book since it was kind of old - He also sent the book which is brand new (Amazon US$45) and the jewel gauge. Everything seems in good order and no stake is clogged. I found myself unpacking very old small, vintage and unopened boxes from many years back to fill the places in the box. I believe this is a fortunate deal not just because of what I got but for discovering the vendor who is very meticulous and take good care the old fashioned way!

 

I also second Geo, clockboy, since I see myself ordering some of the Bergeon parts for this set when I need it. Thanks for the tip.

 

Thank you Daniel, it is and I'm very happy with it. If you need it I'll forward the vendor's link I dealt with. He seems to have still another set.

Even though I'm nowhere near actually needing these tools, I'm still watching a few on eBay. The K&D Inverto / Sietz Jeweling tool set looks like a great deal. I wish I could afford it as I'm sure someday I will need one.

By the way guys, I have a little problem I can't figure out, in my home computer the paste icons in the editor won't work and the pictures won't show their path when I add them in the editor box. At work they do fine. Is there a setting I'm missing in my home computer. Should I turn on the compatibility setting in the tools option in my browser. I use IE11.

I find sometimes I have to open MS Paint and paste the image in there first and safe it to HDD.  IE11 is a true disaster of the browsers mate, have a look at the THOR browser, it's firefox on crack :)

By the way, I sent the person that sold me the staking set a thank you message.

 

He said they provide the same attention to their customers no matter how little the order is. He also said he will have a similar set available in a couple of weeks. It is going to be smaller: 100 stakes.

 

In any case, I find he is an excellent guy to do business and very nice to deal with according to my experience.

 

@ Lawson: I've been meaning to tell you Lawson, but it is always slipping, I love Marjorie's picture! :thumbsu:

      I put the original broken glass (whats left of it) behind the acrylic. This is how it originally looked like. A cheap clock but I like it. Very noisy when the alarm comes wake up guaranteed! 🙂

      If at all possible, find a service guide for the automatic movements your work on, because the lubrication procedures may have different requirements or rely on oils you would not use in a manual wind train (in addition to the braking grease you mentioned). Some autos like older Seikos do not have a manual wind option, so the procedure of letting down the mainspring without being able to use the crown may require a screwdriver in the ratchet wheel screw and great care. Do you have an auto movement you were planning to start with?

      I am an amateur, so there's that. I do not get fixated on amplitude, lift angles, and beat error. However, 4.8ms would bug me if it were my watch. But you must judge your own skills to appreciate the possibility of going backward. I suggest, that you button it up let your friend enjoy the watch for now. As your skills progress, come back to it and correct it. I assume that this watch has a fixed hairspring pin. Some modern watches have an adjustable pin along with adjustable regulator. These are trivial to get in beat. I own a valjoux 726 my dad gave me on my 18th birthday (a looooong time ago). I broke the ratchet wheel with an aggressive wind 4 yrs ago. I have been waiting for my skills to progress before doing a service. I am close. Your advice is well placed and I will apply it.

      I didn’t find any anomaly to the left of the red mark…reflection? this is the balance in its pivot in the inverted assembly. i can’t see any obvious kinks  and the spring is flat as far as I can see. Either the stud screw is missing, or it’s glued in… I don’t know. I’m loathe to fiddle with it. Any further insights? Thanks!

      Update!  I've dismantled it, cleaned all the glue off, and rebuilt and lubricated the base movement. I'll leave the chrono part for another day. It's running well - great amplitude and keeping time, but it's got a beat error of 4.8ms.    How important is it to correct this? I'm worried that the potential for making things worse having to take the hairspring off and on repeatedly to adjust this. Would anyone here accept it at that?
