wild guesses: the top isn't closed properly, the hands are mismatched, the balance looks modern, no country of origin visible (or brand or any markings for that matter)....

I have beer at home, do I get a peanut????

Haven’t a clue, but can I guess. It looks too good for something over 100 years old and I wouldn’t like the red numerals. [emoji16]

The clock is much later than the 1860 Stated by the seller, it has a modern replacement escapement, the top of the clock although the correct style is not original to the clock it is a different colour to the rest of the clock, the case may be bronze but the top is brass.

The movement is modern the hands would not be push fit for a old clock they would be held by a hand collet and pin on a period clock

Its a bit of a marriage of parts looking at it.

wls1971. You have the two right answers. Replacement platform. The whole case is in fact brass and not bronze. Peanut goes to you. :D

 

You are wrong about the date. The movement is around1860. The push on hands are correct and are matching, the style is spade.   

 

A big thanks to all for taking part. Next time I will have to make it harder.

I was more wrong than right, how would you know if a case is bronze as opposed to brass what would be the tell tale signs of a bronze case ? I am currently reading carriage clocks by Charles Allix and Peter Bonnert I shall have to study some more I have a lot to learn.

A picture would be the colour. If you had it to handle it would be the weight. Solid  bronze would be much heavier.  

English Giant c/clocks that have the case made of bronze are a hell of a weight. I used to wonder why are they called c/clocks its because of their style. A petite lady would have trouble lifting one.

I am glad you enjoy them. The key is an important item. Very valuable clocks that have their original key can add to their price. While we are still on the subject of C/Clocks the original travel case can also add to their value, so can the original glass panels.

Any part of a clock that needs to be replaced should be catalogued for the customer,  the old piece handed back. It is also a good idea to tell the owner to keep the old parts with the clock.

      If at all possible, find a service guide for the automatic movements your work on, because the lubrication procedures may have different requirements or rely on oils you would not use in a manual wind train (in addition to the braking grease you mentioned). Some autos like older Seikos do not have a manual wind option, so the procedure of letting down the mainspring without being able to use the crown may require a screwdriver in the ratchet wheel screw and great care. Do you have an auto movement you were planning to start with?

      I am an amateur, so there's that. I do not get fixated on amplitude, lift angles, and beat error. However, 4.8ms would bug me if it were my watch. But you must judge your own skills to appreciate the possibility of going backward. I suggest, that you button it up let your friend enjoy the watch for now. As your skills progress, come back to it and correct it. I assume that this watch has a fixed hairspring pin. Some modern watches have an adjustable pin along with adjustable regulator. These are trivial to get in beat. I own a valjoux 726 my dad gave me on my 18th birthday (a looooong time ago). I broke the ratchet wheel with an aggressive wind 4 yrs ago. I have been waiting for my skills to progress before doing a service. I am close. Your advice is well placed and I will apply it.

      I didn’t find any anomaly to the left of the red mark…reflection? this is the balance in its pivot in the inverted assembly. i can’t see any obvious kinks  and the spring is flat as far as I can see. Either the stud screw is missing, or it’s glued in… I don’t know. I’m loathe to fiddle with it. Any further insights? Thanks!

      Update!  I've dismantled it, cleaned all the glue off, and rebuilt and lubricated the base movement. I'll leave the chrono part for another day. It's running well - great amplitude and keeping time, but it's got a beat error of 4.8ms.    How important is it to correct this? I'm worried that the potential for making things worse having to take the hairspring off and on repeatedly to adjust this. Would anyone here accept it at that?

I will start another thread and act in a more decent manner for the girls and ladies of the group.  Please what will happen if the forum can't be managed by the administrator, are there provisions in place to preserve the achived member's questions and answers over the years.
