I have seen working Lego clocks and Meccano clocks before, the Meccano clocks are particularly interesting, but I agree with you on this one Old Hippy that the maker does not understand how an escapement works. It has no locking and does not use what should be the pendulum to release the escape wheel, it is just providing interesting movement that looks similar to the movement an escapement makes.

This video is a bit long winded, but at the end it shows a working Verge escapement Meccano clock which is pretty cool.

To be honest I still have 2 Meccano fire engines sitting next to my computer, one is a set 5 Fire engine and the other is a set 9 Firetruck about 90% built.

I built them years ago, but took the wheels off and stopped building the set 9 truck as my oldest son who would of been about 5 at the time could help but play with it and kept breaking it. Being he is now 14 I could probably finish building it now.

I never had Meccano as a kid, so as an adult I used to buy old secondhand Meccano and refurbish it and use it.

I also built a set 7 Octopus fairground ride that I would power with my Stuart steam engine which was good fun, never built a clock though.

I also have an original copy of the 1976 Meccano Orrery super model plan that I would like to build one day, but it would involve some significant investment in hard to get Meccano parts.

  I had a friend that worked with wood.   he did good work with cupboards and toys,  very good, wanted to build a clock.  I built him a fixture to cut gears on a table saw.   have not seen him since.  vin

      You will still be looking for a balance complete I’m afraid, this is the balance staff, balance wheel and hairspring in one package. Hairspring and the balance wheel are matched in the factory. Whilst we can change a balance staff the hairspring and balance wheel stay together.   Tom

      The hairspring end has come adrift from the small terminal barrel.  I have tried to remove the taper pin to relocate it, but the task is beyond my skill set, eyes, hands and being in my 70s, probably beyond my life expectancy.  It is not too badly mangled on the end.  On the ebay offer, that really is a bit on the rich side.  I'll keep looking, maybe a good hairspring will turn up with a shot balance staff. As for time spent on knees.  I made up one of these from 3M magnetic tape and a piece of wood.  It works well for magnetic parts. Other things I have suffered with.  I found lubricants so very expensive that I bought some very small syringes and tiny needles.  I just decant a drop into my oiling pots when I start a movement and the remainder keeps really well in the syringes. Finally identifying the correct screw for the part led me to make up the board in the final pic.   Thanks for the info. Kind regards   Chris

      Yes that's the type @watchweasol is referring too but I don't like them as you don't get any feel to what's happening.

      Hi there Stoller,   Caliber is generally stamped under the balance or thereabouts.  Caliber can't neccessarily be identified by bridge layout. Regs

      Unless you've got any better suggestions Isn't that what this forum is about? It still depends what state the balance is in to start with. Edit You see, it's things like this that really wind me up and make me wonder if it's worth even sticking around, think I'll say goodnight and keep well
